After former Tamil Nadu CM Edappadi Palaniswami claimed that Chennai had become a ‘murder city’ due to the public murders that had taken place last week, Police Commissioner Shankar Jaiswal responded by saying that the number of murders in Chennai had reduced by 25% compared to last year.

Countering EPS’s statement that 18 murders had occurred in Chennai in the last 20 days, Shankar Jiwal said that the actual number was only 10.
“Of the 10 murders, 4 were due to personal enmity and 6 due to family issues,” said the top cop, and added, “compared to last year, there has been a reduction of 25% in murders.”
In the last 10 days, two murders carried out by men with knives and sickles were caught on CCTV cameras in Chennai.
Arumugam, the owner of a finance company, was hacked to death by 4 men in Chennai’s Aminjikarai area on May 18. The same night, CCTV visuals showed a 19-year-old named Rahul being hacked over 30 times by a man with a sickle.
The most recent murder took place on Tuesday, May 24. A BJP SC/ST wing leader, Balachandar, was murdered by a gang of 3 men in Chennai’s Chintradipet in broad daylight.
Another incident came to light in Chennai’s Poonamallee on Wednesday, May 25. The burnt body of a man was found lying on the roadside near a dump yard. The corpse’s head and arms were missing.
