Ford government to table legislation requiring referendum on any provincial carbon tax

The Ontario government says it will table legislation that would require any future governments to hold a referendum before introducing a provincial carbon pricing system.
"We are giving the people of Ontario a veto on a carbon tax," Premier Doug Ford said during a Tuesday morning news conference at a gas station in Mississauga.
The measure will be part of an omnibus bill Ford's government will table in the legislature next week, according to an accompanying news release.
The Get It Done Act, an allusion to Ford's campaign slogan during the 2022 provincial election, will also include components to "build on the government's commitments to date to streamline approvals for major infrastructure projects and housing," the release said.
The pending legislation comes ahead of the release of the 2024 provincial budget, which must be tabled before the end of March.
While taking questions from reporters, Ford also said the province intends to eliminate the requirement for drivers to re-register their vehicles each year, though he didn't say when he expects that change to be implemented.
More to come.
