Fishermen from rival villages clash in Puducherry, police open fire to disperse crowd

Policemen near Veerampattinam in Puducherry fired in the air to stop two rival groups of fishermen from fighting with one another.

Policemen opened one round of fire in the air to stop two groups of rival fishermen from fighting with one another at a place near Veerampattinam in Puducherry on Saturday. The villagers of Veerampatinam and Nallavadu have had a longstanding dispute with each other over the use of purse seine net and the fishing area in the sea. The situation turned violent on Saturday when mid-sea fishermen from both the villages resorted to violence.
