An FIR was registered in Nagpur against Maharashtra Congress leader Sheikh Hussain for allegedly using derogatory language against Prime Minister Narendra Modi, news agency ANI reported.
The Gittikhadan Police Station lodged the complaint on Tuesday night under section 294 (obscene acts and songs) and 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace) of the Indian Penal Code.
Sheikh Hussain, former Nagpur Congress unit president, made the alleged remarks while criticising PM Modi over questioning of Rahul Gandhi by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in the National Herald money laundering case. He was speaking at a demonstration by local Congress workers in support of the Gandhi scion on Monday.
The Nagpur unit of the BJP had taken exception to the objectionable remarks allegedly made by Hussain and said they would lodge a police complaint.
