Residents of Prince Edward Island woke up to their first significant snowfall Saturday morning with more expected throughout the day.
The Island remains under a winter storm warning with blowing winds and up to 20 centimetres of snow possible by the evening, according to Environment Canada. That is down from an earlier forecast calling for up to 25 centimetres.
All departures for ferry service between Wood Islands, P.E.I., and Caribou, N.S., have been cancelled Saturday.
The weather has not yet caused any cancellations at Charlottetown Airport, but the 1:17 p.m. Porter flight from Ottawa has been delayed an hour. The three Air Canada flights scheduled for Saturday are showing on time.
The Confederation Bridge remains open but is under a wind warning advisory that could result in restrictions.
UPEI's Charlottetown and St. Peter's Bay campuses are closed for the day.
The Atlantic Veterinary College teaching hospital will remain open for emergencies.
The heavy snow combined with wind gusts of up to 80 km/h could cause poor road conditions and limited visibility, Environment Canada said.
