Federal election 2021: Liberal Lawrence MacAulay leading in Cardigan

Liberal Lawrence MacAulay is aiming for his 11th straight election victory in the eastern P.E.I. riding of Cardigan, and candidates from five other parties are looking to end his run.
MacAulay took an early lead as results started to come in after polls closed Monday night.

MacAulay has represented Cardigan since 1988, a year that marked the beginning of Liberal domination on the Island at the federal level.
Both Phelan and Thiele ran against MacAulay in 2019, but MacAulay won comfortably with 49 per cent of the vote that time out. Phelan placed second with 29 per cent and Thiele managed just seven per cent. Green candidate Glen Beaton placed third in 2019 with 14 per cent of the vote.
MacAulay's showing in 2019 was his weakest of the last five elections. In 2015, he took almost two-thirds of the votes cast.
