The Traffic Police in Puducherry continued their crackdown on underage driving by registering cases against individuals who allow juveniles to drive their vehicles in the Union Territory.
Just a few days after invoking relevant provisions of the M.V. Act while arresting the uncle of a minor, who, in an inebriated state, drove the former’s two-wheeler, causing a fatal accident in the town, the father of another minor was arrested on Monday (April 7, 2025).
The father had allowed his son to ride his motorbike in a negligent manner, resulting in an accident, the police said.
The arrest was made following a complaint given by a resident of Periyakalapet, after her husband met with an accident while riding his bike on ECR. She had stated in her complaint that a minor boy, who was on a speeding bike, dashed against her husband’s two-wheeler. She said her husband was treated as in-patient at a hospital for injuries.
Senior Superintendent of Police, Traffic, Praveen Kumar Tripati, in a release on Tuesday (April 8, 2025) said the juvenile’s father was arrested under Section 199 (A) of M.V. Act. The vehicle that the minor was riding did not have valid insurance too. The father was produced before the court and the minor before the Juvenile Justice Board, the release said.
“He [the father] was arrested for allowing the minor to ride his bike and also for not having valid insurance. As the juvenile belongs to Tamil Nadu, we have recommended to the concerned RTO not to issue licence till he attains the age of 25 years. The Puducherry RTO has been requested to suspend the RC of the vehicle. Public are advised not to allow their minor children not to drive any vehicles to avoid legal action against the parent/guardian/owner of the vehicle,” he said.
