Farmers losing livestock, poultry to wandering dogs in Tiruppur await Government Order on compensation
Farmers in Kangayam, Uthukuli, Vellakovil, Dharapuram and other rural parts of Tiruppur district, who have been losing their goats, sheep and poultry hens to packs of wandering dogs, have apparently chosen to wait for a few more days to ascertain the district administration’s seriousness in securing government compensation for the loss.
Several hundreds of goats and sheep had been killed by the growing number of wandering dogs have been reported so far, after the farmers began to handle the issue in an organised way.
The loss of over 270 hens at a poultry farm in Anagegoundanpudur near Kangayam and the attack on three goats at an enclosure in Salapalayam near Uthukuli are the recent instances.
In deference to the request by the local officials to exercise restraint, the farmers have decided to wait for a few more days, it is learnt.
During the third week of November, the Animal Husbandry Department, on the advice of the district administration, made it known that the loss of the livestock due to attack by wandering dogs will be enumerated for the purpose of compensation, over a 45-day period.
A proposal was forwarded to the government for further action.
Farmers are in an agitated state of mind as the government has not issued an order on compensation for the dead livestock as yet. In the absence of anticipated outcome so far, the affected farmers have expressed their conviction to go ahead with the next phase of struggle.
