Members of the Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Committee (KMSC) on Monday blocked rail traffic for three hours in Punjab on the first anniversary of the Lakhimpur Kheri violence that claimed eight lives.
The protesters demanded the sacking of Union minister Ajay Mishra and the release of arrested farmers.
Last year, Ashish Misha, son of Union Minister of State (MoS) for Home Ajay Misra, was accused of running over protesting farmers with his car in Uttar Pradesh’s Lakhimpur Kheri. Eight people died as a result of the incident.
The farmers were protesting against the Centre's three farm bills ahead of an event in Tikunia, which is Union Minister Ajay Misra's paternal village in Lakhimpur Kheri. Uttar Pradesh Deputy CM Keshav Prasad Maurya was to be the chief guest at this event.
The farmers had assembled to protest Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya’s visit to Banbirpur.
The protesting farmers were reportedly angry with Union minister Ajay Misra Teni over his remarks during his visit to Lakhimpur Kheri on September 25, incidentally, his birthday, when he addressed a farmers' gathering in his Lok Sabha constituency.
