A combined team of Whitefield Police and Mahadevapura Police busted two fake call centres in Karnataka’s Whitefield on Thursday night, July 7. A total of 72 callers were arrested and 138 computers used by them were seized during the searches.
The joint operation was carried out under the supervision of the Assistant Commissioner of Police and the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Whitefield. The teams searched 2 premises in Whitefield, namely Ethical infotech Private Limited and Gayathri Tech Park.
The searches were conducted to check for organised cyber fraud run by fake call centres.
Investigations revealed that two kingpins from Ahmedabad, Gujarat were employing young graduates to work as callers. They were mostly hired from Maharashtra, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Haryana and Delhi.
The callers mainly targeted victims in the United States. Using methods such as texting and voice mail, the callers informed the victims that fraudulent activity was detected in their accounts (Bank, Amazon Ac, etc.).
When the victims wanted to resolve the issue, private and confidential information was extracted from them. Gullible victims were tricked into disclosing their social security numbers, bank account details, etc.
The accused further used untraceable money transfer apps like Amazon gift cards, crypto currency and wire transfers to syphon funds from the victims.
