Experts react to NYC plan to involuntarily commit mentally ill homeless: 'Band-aid' on 'gaping wound'
Fox News
Several experts expressed concern to Fox News Digital after NYC Mayor Eric Adams announced a plan to combat homelessness and crime that includes involuntary commitments.
"And so to me, I think it's pretty extreme. I understand that people need help, but the point is that the resources have to be built and in place for people to get help versus these involuntary commitments, which also seems like a civil rights issue." Adams announced in late November a "new pathway forward" to address homelessness on New York City’s streets and subways that includes a directive expanding and clarifying the ability for first responders to involuntarily commit homeless individuals with clear mental health issues.
