Mysuru Ex-Servicemen Movement celebrates 77th Army Day at school for the blind, emphasizing importance of honoring sacrifices.
The 77th Army Day was celebrated by members of the Mysuru Ex-Servicemen Movement at the government school for the blind, in the city on Wednesday.
The office-bearers of the organisation underscored the importance of Army Day celebrations and said that it is celebrated on January 15 every day to commemorate the event when General K.M. Cariappa (who latter went to become Field Marshal) took over the command of the Indian Army from British General Sir Francis Roy Bucher in 1949 and became the first Indian Commander-in-Chief of the Indian army.
The day is also an occasion to pay tributes and remember all those sacrificed their lives in defence of the country. The event was attended by students of the blind school and those receiving training at Sainik Academy, Mysuru, members of Mysuru Ex Servicemen’s Movement, etc.
The organisers of the event sought the introduction of valour of defence personnel in school texts. With respect to facilities for ex-servicemen, the government was urged to allot sites to retired defence personnel as part of the resettlement package. Games and sports were conducted for specially-abled children and those visually challenged to mark the occasion. The bust of Louis Braille - who invented the Braille script to facilitate the blind to read – on the school premises was also garlanded.
