DMK and Naam Tamilar Katchi face off in Erode bypoll as ruling party highlights government achievements in campaign.
With major political parties boycotting the bypoll to the Erode (East) Assembly constituency, the stage is set for a two-cornered contest between the DMK and Naam Tamilar Katchi. The ruling party kickstarted the election campaign by highlighting the government’s accomplishments over the past four years.
Following the death of Congress MLA E.V.K.S. Elangovan, the Election Commission of India announced a byelection for the constituency on February 5. The Congress announced that the DMK would contest the election, and Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, who heads the INDIA bloc in the State, fielded V.C. Chandhirakumar as the candidate.
On Tuesday evening, Minister for Housing and Urban Development S. Muthusamy, along with Mr. Chandhirakumar, Rajya Sabha MP Anthiyur P Selvaraj and Erode MP K.E. Prakash, began the campaign at Periyar Nagar. They conducted a door-to-door campaign seeking votes for the ‘rising sun’ symbol and distributed pamphlets containing details of the government’s achievements. On Wednesday, they continued their campaign at Periyar Nagar and Veerappanchatiram.
A functionary taking part in the campaign said DMK expects to win by over 1.30 lakh votes due to the beneficial impact of government schemes on the people. He said that the campaign would highlight the government’s achievements in their campaign over the next three weeks. State Ministers are expected to join campaigns in the constituency starting next week, which will further intensify their efforts, he added.
