HE the Minister of Environment and Climate Change Sheikh Dr Faleh bin Nasser bin Ahmed bin Ali al-Thani with other officials and volunteers.
Under the patronage of HE the Minister of Environment and Climate Change Sheikh Dr Faleh bin Nasser bin Ahmed bin Ali al-Thani, the ministry organised Tuesday an awareness event to clean up Fuwairit Beach on the occasion of the beginning of the turtle nestling season 2022.
HE the minister, who participated in the event along with a number of officials, stressed the importance of maintaining biological diversity and protecting the endangered species. He also appreciated the efforts exerted by the ministry to protect such species including the project for the endangered hawksbill turtles, financed by QatarEnergy and implemented by Qatar University in co-operation with a team from the Department of Protection and Wildlife. A section of the Fuwairit Beach has been shut as it is the safe haven of turtles and the team concerned at the ministry has released more than 35,000 baby turtles into the sea over the past five years. HE the minister pointed out that there is a plan to develop Fuwairit Beach and open a section for the public during the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, after creating a free zone for turtle nesting and another zone for transferring the turtles and aquariums, where the ministry is planning to keep the baby turtles to conduct some related researches and studies. Taleb Khalid al-Shahwani, director of the Department of Protection and Wildlife, gave a brief presentation on the project and the efforts exerted by the ministry in this regard. Eventually, the participants cleaned up the beach and toured its various parts. They included 30 volunteers from Qatar Red Crescent Society, participants from the Friends of the Environment Center and some other departments from the ministry, in addition to the General Cleanliness Department at the Ministry of Municipality.
