A caregiver, who worked at a home, was awarded life imprisonment after he was caught on tape raping a 99-year-old inmate.
A 48-year-old caregiver in England’s Blackpool, Lancashire, was recently caught on camera raping a 99-year-old dementia patient. He was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum of 10 years.
The crime was caught on a secret camera installed in the patient’s room after her family became worried about a sudden change in her behaviour.
The accused, Phillip Carey, confessed to attacking his victim at the care home where he worked in Blackpool, Lancashire. He pleaded guilty as the Preston Crown Court awarded the punishment.
The prosecutor said: “The victim would not allow physical contact and begged her relatives when they visited. ‘Don’t leave me, they will hurt me’ she would plead.”
That is when the family installed the secret camera. To their horror, they saw Carey on the live feed enter the woman’s room, where he raped her.
They immediately informed the police and got Carey arrested. He confessed to his crime in the court when prosecutors presented forensic evidence and the camera footage.
Senior prosecutor Sophie Rozdolskyj said: “Carey abused his position of trust and targeted a vulnerable woman whom he should have been caring for. I am grateful to the victim’s family who showed great strength throughout the court’s proceedings. I hope today’s sentence provides them with some comfort, knowing that Carey has been brought to justice for his actions.”
