England turn up the heat on the South African bowling line-up, hitting back with twin centuries from two Bens - Stokes and Foakes.
England continued to build onto their good work on Day 2 against South Africa as they put together a lead of 241 runs at the end of Day 2 in the 2nd Test match against Manchester. England were put in a terrific position in the Test match by two well made knocks from skipper Ben Stokes and wicket-keeper Ben Stokes, who struck individual centuries to give England the lead in the Test match.
One must not forget that England came into this Test match losing the Lord's encounter by an innings and 12 runs, which put question marks on their ability to play express pace. Things had started off on the same manner with Anrich Nortje breathing fire once again. England had lost three early wickets in their first innings, but a fightback from Jonny Bairstow and Zack Crawley changed the complexion of the game.
Stokes and wicketkeeper-batsman Foakes had put on a 173-run partnership for the sixth wicket after South African quick Anrich Nortje struck twice to remove England's overnight batsmen during an outstanding opening spell in the morning session.
Jonny Bairstow fell one run short of his half century, with Nortje adding reverse swing to his top pace and the Yorkshireman edging to Erwee at first slip.
Another fine delivery ended the solid contribution of 38 from under-scrutiny England opening batsman Zak Crawley, with Nortje's perfect line inducing an edge to keeper Kyle Verreynne.
That meant England were on 147-5, still four runs behind South Africa's first innings total. But Stokes and Foakes then batted positively before lunch to begin building the lead.
