Nobel Laureate and child rights’ activist Kailash Satyarthi stated that people have to work on developing compassionate intelligence to counter the dangers of artificial intelligence (AI) today.
Delivering his convocation address at ‘Deekshanta Samarambha 2025’, the first convocation ceremony of Chanakya University on Monday, he highlighted the rapid advancements in technology, particularly AI, and expressed concern over its growing dominance over humanities.
He also emphasised fostering a ‘Compassion Quotient (CQ)‘ to counter the growing disconnect in society, advocating for compassionate leadership in schools, colleges, and professions like medicine, media and governance to build a more empathetic and humane world. He also spoke about the influence of social media on children and stressed on the importance of staying united to eliminate issues like child marriage, child labour, sexual abuse against children, and school dropouts ensuring education for all.
“The biggest challenge we face is that we still lack sufficient infrastructure and investment in providing good quality education and opportunities for a better life for children. We need to prioritise investing in quality education, starting from school education to the university level,” he said.
At the convocation, a total of 37 students were awarded postgraduate degrees. M.K. Sridhar, Chancellor of the University, Kris Gopalakrishnan, Chairman, Axilor Ventures and Co-founder, Infosys, and others were present.
Saanvi Jha, a Class 9 student from Ryan International School, Kundalahalli, Bengaluru, secured Karnataka Rank 1 in the National Meteorological Olympiad. She was felicitated by the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) during its 150th anniversary celebrations held in New Delhi, on January 14 and 15, 2025.
