Elon Musk on Friday evening announced he has sold his social media company, X, to xAI, his artificial intelligence company, in a deal that values X at $33 billion, much less than he paid for it in 2022 but a significant rebound from its moribund valuation just a few months ago. “xAI and X’s futures are intertwined,” Musk said in a post on X. “Today, we officially take the step to combine the data, models, compute, distribution and talent. This combination will unlock immense potential by blending xAI’s advanced AI capability and expertise with X’s massive reach.” Musk didn’t announce any immediate changes to X, although xAI’s Grok chatbot is already integrated into the social media platform. Musk said that the combined platform will “deliver smarter, more meaningful experiences.” The news also comes as Musk has been in the spotlight for his role at the Department of Government Efficiency in the Trump administration. This is a developing story and will be updated.
