Nitin Gadkari said Elon Musk was welcome in India but Tesla must make in India and not import cars from China.
Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari on Tuesday, April 26, said Tesla CEO Elon Musk is welcome to India but the company must 'Make in India'.
Speaking at Raisina Dialogue 2022 in New Delhi, Gadkari said that India is a large market for all electric vehicles. He said, "If Elon Musk is ready to manufacture in India, we have all the competencies and technology. Our request to him is to manufacture in India. India is a huge market, we have ports here. He could make in India and export all over."
The BJP minister added that the company must not import cars from China, saying it is not a good proposition. "But suppose he wants to manufacture in China and sell in India, it cannot be a good proposition," Gadkari said.
Tesla has been vying the Indian market for a long time. Earlier in January, Musk had said his company is facing a ‘lot of challenges’ launching its car in India, and Tesla is working with the govt to overcome obstacles.
Meanwhile, on Tuesday, Elon Musk bought Twitter. The microblogging platform accepted Musk’s billion-dollar deal after evaluating it for over a week. The Tesla CEO has purchased Twitter for approx. $44 billion, which is around $54.20 per share.
