The video was posted on Twitter by IAS officer Surpiya Sahu and has gone viral online.
A disheartening video of a herd of elephants trying to cross over the fences along the railway tracks has gone viral online. The incident happened in Tamil Nadu’s Nilgiris and the clip was shared by IAS officer Supriya Sahu. However, the Railway Ministry took swift action to provide a safer route for the animals to cross.
In the now-viral video, a herd of elephants can be seen struggling to cross the walls lining the railway tracks. They wanted to enter the forest that was on the other side but, due to the fencing, were unable to do so.
After a few seconds, the herd can be seen walking on the tracks so that they could climb and enter the forest. Luckily, there weren’t any incoming trains on the lines. Surpiya Sahu called the video distressing and highlighted the need for a wildlife-friendly design.
“Distressing to see that this herd of elephants had to negotiate their way through danger-filled railway track. Need to have a mandatory SOP for all infra agencies towards sensitive wildlife-friendly design & execution,” reads the caption of the post.
