An errant balloon was the cause of strife instead of celebration for about 2,000 Maritime Electric customers late Saturday morning.
Maritime Electric spokesperson Kim Griffin said a helium balloon tangled in power lines led to an unexpected outage just before 11:30 a.m.
Griffin said when something makes contact with the lines, the system will shut down to protect itself until crews can arrive to check the outage and restore power.
The utility's online outage map showed as many as 2,069 customers without electricity at noon Saturday. Power was restored at around 12:30 p.m.
