Electric scooter emits thick smoke in Tamil Nadu; fourth incident in 3 weeks

E-bike emitted thick smoke in Tamil Nadu's Thiruppur. The owner removed the battery from the bike when he was alerted about the incident, thus preventing the bike from bursting into flames.
An electric bike emitted smoke in Tamil Nadu's Thiruppur on Monday, raising alarms over safety of e-scooters once again. This was the fourth such incident of e-bikes catching fire or emitting smoke in three weeks since a father-daughter duo died after an electric bike exploded while charging.
In this case, the owner of the e-bike was alerted about smoke emanating from the battery module by commuters. He immediately jumped off the bike and removed the battery, preventing the bike from bursting into flames.

On March 26, a man and his daughter died due to suffocation after their e-bike went on flames in front of their house in Vellore. The new e-bike was kept on charge at the entrance of his small house. Due to an electrical short circuit, the e-bike went up in flames, resulting in thick smoke.
A few days after this incident, another e-bike caught fire in Manappari region of Trichy. The battery was gutted in flames but no injuries were reported. A similar issue was reported from Chennai on March 30, when an e-bike caught fire on the road. The vehicle was completely charred to ashes in few minutes.
