Education minister to replace Governor as Visitor at private universities: Bengal passes bill
India Today
A bill was passed in the West Bengal assembly on Tuesday to appoint the Education Minister as the Visitor of private universities in the state, replacing Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar.
The West Bengal Assembly on Tuesday cleared a bill to replace the Governor with the state education minister as Visitor of private universities.
The West Bengal University Laws Amendment Bill, 2022, seeks to replace Governor Jagdeep Dhankar as the Visitor of private universities in the state.
According to reports, there was no voting in the House over the bill as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLAs staged a walkout when the bill was introduced.
This came a day after the Bengal Assembly passed a bill to replace the Governor with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee as the Chancellor of all state-run universities.
Yesterday's bill was passed in the 294-member House after 182 members voted in favour of the legislation and 40 against it. The BJP, however, claimed that 57 BJP MLAs were present in the House, and the voting didn't occur following norms.
The state Assembly, where Trinamool Congress sits in the majority, has cleared back-to-back bills amid the ongoing feud between West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee and Governor Jagdeep Dhankar.
Dhankar had recently locked horns with the TMC dispensation over the appointment of vice-chancellors (VCs) at state-run varsities.
