The ED has filed chargesheet against former Punjab CM Charanjit Channi's nephew Bhupinder Singh Honey in a money laundering case linked to illegal sand mining and other activities.
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has filed its chargesheet against Bhupinder Singh Honey, nephew of former Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi, in a money laundering case linked to illegal sand mining and other activities.
Bhupinder Singh Honey has been charged under Sections 3 (offence of money laundering), 4 (punishment for money laundering), 44 (offences triable by special courts) and 45 (offences to be cognisable and non-bailable), of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).
The financial probe agency has alleged that Bhupinder Singh Honey was the director of a firm formed to launder money generated through illegal sand mining. ED officials had earlier recovered Rs 10 crore while conducting search operations at premises owned by the former Punjab CM’s nephew.
Officials also reportedly recovered various papers relating to mining activities of Malikpur Mine of Kudratdeep Singh as well as pages containing handwritten cash entries recovered and seized.
Further investigation revealed that Punjab resident Kudratdeep Singh was involved in illegal sand mining at several places in the state. After an FIR was lodged against him in 2017, the next year, a company by the name Providers Overseas Consultants Private Limited was registered in which Kudratdeep Singh was made shareholder, whereas Bhupinder Singh Honey and his alleged associate Sandeep Kumar were named as directors of the company. All three held 33.33 per cent stakes in the company.
The ED also suspects that Channi’s nephew used his political links to provide favourable postings to government officials in exchange for crores of rupees.
