EC hikes expenditure limit for candidates contesting upcoming Lok Sabha, Assembly polls

Expenditure limits for candidates have been hiked from Rs 54 lakh-Rs 70 lakh to Rs 75 lakh-Rs 90 lakh for Parliamentary constituencies and from Rs 20 lakh-Rs 28 lakh to Rs 28 lakh-Rs 40 lakh for Assembly constituencies.
The Election Commission (EC) has decided to increase the existing expenditure limit for candidates contesting the upcoming Lok Sabha and Assembly elections.
The last major revision to the election expenditure limit for candidates was carried out in 2014, which was further increased by 10 per cent in 2020. Simultaneously, the poll body formed a committee comprising IRS officer (retd.) Harish Kumar, Secretary General Umesh Sinha and Senior Deputy Election Commissioner in the EC Chandra Bhushan Kumar to study the cost factors and other related issues, and make suitable recommendations.
