Drug menace in Mumbai top priority: Commissioner of Police
India Today
The drug menace in Mumbai is our top priority and will soon take actions in that direction, said the Mumbai police commissioner.
The Mumbai police commissioner in a press conference said that action on the drug menace in the city is his top priority and will soon take action in that direction.
"Drug consumption in the city is a huge menace. You will find new initiatives in future regarding the same. I have said that anti-narcotics cells and police will work on all drugs cases. No case is small and small quantities can't be ignored," said Pandey.
He also shared a new initiative taken by Mumbai police of head constables investigating simple crime cases. Giving more powers to the head constables equivalent to officers who can investigate simpler crimes directly increasing investigation strength of the Mumbai Police force. Current Police sub-inspector and inspector level officers are investigating cases. Their count is around 3,000. If head constables are allowed to handle cases the strength of investigating officers will go up to more than 10000. Head constables are being trained as we speak. We have even ensured that these constables will retire as PSI.’’
Mumbai police has also stopped towing of vehicles till the time city gets permanent parking places for these towed vehicles. Till then, towing will remain suspended. As government should provide for enough parking spaces.
He further said, ‘’I have personally suffered due to towing. I have stopped security warden who had been provided by construction site to manage traffic. I made it clear we in uniform will take control of the city's traffic, " Pandey said.
Talking about cyber-crime, Pandey said there is a basic problem in cyber-crime that there is no law specific to cyber-crime. There are certain sections in IT Act which deal with cyber-crimes but are not enough. We need data protection Act.
Pandey said that those executive committee members of housing society found cutting water and electricity connections will be booked for extortion and criminal house tress passing. And added that instructions have already been given to police stations to take the action. "Take action against non-payment of maintenance according to cooperative society act not by extortion."
