After an alarming rise in drug addiction in Kashmir, the Jammu & Kashmir health department has started a full-fledged de-addiction facility in all district hospitals of J&K. This has begun to bear fruit in the Kulgam district hospital where 50-60 patients visit daily and are being treated.
The centre is the first such facility in the district. It has been set up with funding from the Ministry of Social Justice and Employment with assistance from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS).
Doctors are doing their best to help people who are addicted to drugs get freedom and addicts are availing medical treatment free of cost. The doctors treating such patients in the hospital said that most of the patients are heroin addicts.
Medical superintendent, district hospital Kulgam, Afsana Bano, told India Today that patients from nearby districts are also coming for treatment in the centre.
“I request parents to consult nearby hospitals if they think their child is suffering from drug abuse. Full treatment facilities for such patients are available here in Kashmir,” said Afsana Bano.
During the past many years, due to the depression and the situation in the valley, the number of drug addicts is increasing at an alarming rate. The civil society as well as the government are very much concerned about this menace in Kashmir.
