A 62-year-old Charlottetown man is dead after a single-vehicle crash in the Scotchfort area Friday morning.
Queens District RCMP said in a news release that officers responded to a 10:40 a.m. report about a garbage truck that had left the road and ended up on its side on Afton Road.
Island EMS and the East River Fire Department also responded, and the man was declared dead at the scene.
The news release said provincial workplace safety officials were called in to take part in the investigation.
In an emailed statement to CBC News, a spokesperson for the Workers Compensation Board of P.E.I. confirmed it is investigating the death of a garbage truck driver as a work-related incident.
"The WCB extends its sincere condolences to the deceased's family, friends and co-workers on the loss of their family and community member," the statement said.
The board said its occupational health and safety division will begin a formal investigation, but would not provide any further details.
The coroner's office is also involved in the investigation.
