The doctor said that this is a very rare case, sometimes found in cardiac surgery patients worldwide and chances of survival are only 50 per cent.
A 70-year-old man diagnosed with a rare condition got a fresh lease of life after undergoing a complex surgery in which doctors extracted a "6 cm-long fungal ball" from his heart valve, hospital authorities said on Tuesday.
Interacting with reporters here, the patient Suresh Chandra said he had contracted COVID-19 in May 2021 and had recovered at home.
But a few months later, Mr Chandra said he started having persistent cough and high fever.
"I consulted various doctors. Everyone assumed it to be a post-Covid complication, and presumed it to be due to lung infection," he said, adding he has a history of aortic valve replacement.
