The 11 men, who were convicted in 2008 and sentenced to life imprisonment for offences of rape and murder, were recently released under the Gujarat government’s 1992 remission policy.
The Supreme Court notice was issued today in a plea challenging the release of the 11 men convicted in the Bilkis Bano rape case.
The 11 men, who were convicted in 2008 and sentenced to life imprisonment for offences of rape and murder, were recently released under the Gujarat government’s 1992 remission policy.
The case was heard today by a bench of Chief Justice of India (CJI) NV Ramana, Justice Ajay Rastogi and Justice Vikram Nath.
Justice Ajay Rastogi and Justice Vikram Nath were on the bench which had directed the remission application of one of the convicts to be considered under Gujarat's 1992 policy.

Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing for the petitioner, submitted that "14 people were killed, women were raped several times. The question is, under these circumstances, what the judicial review of court in the context of remission is".
Justice Ajay Rastogi said that the men were convicted for the acts they committed and the question is whether, under the relevant scheme, they were justified in being considered for remission.
