Did Tamil Nadu Police ordered 'mapping' of North Indian workers? Cop refutes claim

Tamil Nadu Police has denied reports of 'mapping' North Indian workers in the wake of Rameswaram rape and murder incident.
Recently, a WhatsApp message went viral with a claim that Tamil Nadu Police ordered mapping of North Indian workers in the state. The message claimed that DGP Sylendra Babu had asked the cops to collect details, including Aadhar, of North Indians, especially street vendors and workers.
The police have now refuted the claim. Speaking to India Today, DGP Sylendra Babu stated that following the Rameswaram rape and murder incident, employers were advised to make sure that they knew about the past history of workers they are employing.
Recently, a 45-year-old fisherwoman from Rameswaram was allegedly gang raped and murdered by six men from Orissa, who were working on a prawn farm in the region. The instruction to collect data of workers was issued by Tamil Nadu Police following this incident, where migrant workers were involved.
“There is no such thing. We’ve only requested employers to use the character verification facility or the Kaavalan App to find out the past history, such as the case history of anyone new they are planning to employ,” the DGP said.
India Today found out that 18 panchayats in Ramanathapuram district had issued a circular after the rape and murder incident.
"For those people from other states working in construction, engineering, hotels, hostels, prawn industry, and those working as pani puri and Kulfi sellers, below details should be submitted to the panchayat office before June 15," the order read.
The details include name, age, photo, Aadhar card, phone number, details of present employer, current address and others.
