The DCW issued a notice to Jawaharlal Nehru University's registrar seeking details of action taken over the recent case of sexual assault of a student inside the campus.
The Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) on Saturday issued a notice to Jawaharlal Nehru University's registrar over the recent case of sexual assault of a student inside the campus on January 17, 2022.
The panel took sou-moto cognisance of media reports on the matter and sought details of action taken till now from the registrar.
DCW chairperson Swati Maliwal said, "I have issued a notice to the JNU administration and I desire that the university administration must listen to the protestors and accept their legitimate demands. The law mandates an ICC to be set up, but I fail to understand why there is no greater representation for students and teachers and a transparent appointment process? The Commission is expecting proactive action from JNU in the matter."
Maliwal expressed shock at the incident and said that it is the university's responsibility to ensure the safety of students.
"It's really sad that such an incident took place inside the university campus. Ensuring the safety of students inside the campus is the prime responsibility of the university. I have been seeing media reports regarding students protesting over the inefficiency of the university and its Internal Complaints Committee," she said.
The DCW in the notice stated that following the assault, protests have been ongoing in JNU with the students and teachers demanding that strict measures be implemented by the university to prevent sexual crimes against students.
The DCW also expressed concern regarding the lack of student representation in the current Internal Complaints Committee of the University and sought complete details of members and process adopted in the constitution of the existing Internal Complaint Committee and also of GSCASH.
