Delhi MCD elections: Hustle bustle in campaign missing as parties wait for UP poll result
India Today
The usual hustle and bustle associated with the campaigning of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) polls is missing this time. The parties in the fray are waiting for the results of the Uttar Pradesh elections to make the next move.
With two months to go for the upcoming elections for Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), the poll fever is yet to grip the national capital. This year, the election campaigns in Delhi lack the hustle and bustle and the parties still have to build up momentum in the upcoming MCD polls.
Even though the parties are busy making statements and addressing press conferences and accusing each other on various grounds, there is not much of a buzz as the Uttar Pradesh assembly elections are going on. The results for the UP elections are very crucial for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Congress and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). The results of these elections will set the stage for the upcoming MCD polls in Delhi and parties are eagerly waiting for its results to make the next move.
Apart from Uttar Pradesh, the result of the Punjab Assembly elections, held on February 20, is very important for Congress and AAP. The results of the Punjab elections may also redefine the political future of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.
The general elections to 272 wards of three Municipal Corporation of Delhi are scheduled to be held in April. Currently, the BJP has been ruling all three corporations for the last 15 years with Congress and AAP jostling for the Mayor’s seat. The municipal wards are spread over 70 assembly constituencies and seven parliamentary constituencies.
The BJP, AAP and Congress have been training guns on each other over various issues ahead of the upcoming MCD polls in the national capital. While Congress has accused the BJP of corruption, Delhi's ruling party, AAP, claimed that the BJP and Congress have surrendered the fight in the MCD polls as they know they will lose.
“The BJP will win 300 seats in the assembly elections in UP and it will have a direct impact on the MCD polls as people’s trust will be restored again in the party and its leadership. The current AAP government of Delhi has failed to construct a single flyover, college or school,” said Naveen Kumar, Delhi BJP spokesperson.
However, Congress and AAP are claiming victory over Punjab. The Congress party claims that the MCD polls will be contested on local issues but the victory in assembly elections could have a positive effect.
