Assam and Mizoram share a boundary of about 165 km. However, the border dispute between Assam and Mizoram did not arise in 1987 when Mizoram got its present identity. The dispute dates back to colonial times in the 19th century.

The separate states were created based on history and the cultural identities of people living in these units.
