Debutant to captain: Sanju Samson's dramatic 9-year journey for Rajasthan Royals in IPL
India Today
Skipper Sanju Samson made his Indian Premier League debut for Rajasthan Royals exactly 9 years ago in 2013. Now, he is leading the RR squad in IPL 2022.
Rajasthan Royals captain Sanju Samson completed nine years in the Indian Premier League as it was exactly on this date in 2013 when the Kerala batter got his maiden IPL cap. Samson has had an indifferent run in the IPL as a batter first and now as a captain too.
Sanju Samson took over from Australia batter Steve Smith as Rajasthan's captain ahead of IPL 2021. However, the Kerala batting star was not able to reverse the team's fortunes as they finished second from last in 2021 following a series of injury issues. Rajasthan last qualified for the play-offs in 2018, following which they finished 7th, 8th and 7th.
Rajasthan Royals have looked like the team to beat in IPL 2022 as the Sanju Samson-led side head into the Gujarat Titans clash on the back of a thrilling 3-run win over Lucknow Super Giants. RR successfully defended 165 after stunning spells from Trent Boult, Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Sen, who defended 15 runs against Marcus Stoinis in the final over. RR's decision to also retire out R Ashwin grabbed the eyeballs after Shimron Hetmyer's onslaught.
RR started IPL 2022 campaign with a convincing 61-run win over SunRisers Hyderabad and then they went on to defeat 5-time champions Mumbai Indians. However, they lost their third game to Royal Challengers Bangalore.
