Debris found in search for 2 missing boaters in Newfoundland waters

Debris has been found in water in the search for two missing men who left on a hunting expedition off the coast of Newfoundland and didn't return, according to the Canadian Coast Guard.
According to Neil Peet, the coast guard's acting superintendent of maritime search and rescue, the two men — a 20-year-old and a 30-year-old — are believed to have departed from Lawrence Harbour, in the Bay of Exploits area, on Saturday in a 14-foot aluminum boat.
The coast guard received a call around 5:15 p.m. from family members who said the men were overdue, the RCMP said Monday afternoon.
The search began Sunday, including three coast guard ships, local volunteer boats, Department of National Defence aircraft and ground search and rescue volunteers.
Peet said debris confirmed to be connected to the men was found about three nautical miles north of Black Island, Notre Dame Bay — about 15 nautical miles from their starting point.
He said the coast guard will not say what was found out of respect for the family.
"We're throwing everything we have at it.… With the time of the year and the water temperature and the fact that the debris was found in the water, we do at this point have some grave concerns for the welfare of the individuals," Peet said.
Poor visibility hampered the operation Sunday night, Peet said, but the coast guard hopes to continue the search until the men are found.
"Given the number of islands in the Bay of Exploits and the size of the bay itself, the search area right now is about three times the size of Fogo Island.… We're in full-on search mode and we continue to do so for the foreseeable future," he said.
