The Crown is staying charges of criminal negligence causing death and failing to provide the necessities of life against veteran Prince Albert police officer Tyson Morash.
He had been charged after the in-custody death of 33-year-old Saul Laliberte on Nov. 7, 2021.
"Charges were stayed in this case on Dec. 3, 2024. To move forward with a prosecution, Public Prosecutions must be satisfied that there is a reasonable likelihood of conviction and that it is in the public interest to continue with a prosecution," Noel Busse with the Ministry of Justice wrote in an email.
"Prosecutors must review cases on an ongoing basis to make sure the case continues to meet the standard for prosecution. After careful consideration, it was determined this case no longer met the prosecution standard. Given this assessment, the prosecutor directed a stay of proceedings."
Saskatoon police were called to investigate the circumstances of Laliberte's death and they recommended the criminal charges. No other details of the allegations were made available.
Although he is not facing a criminal trial, Morash is still facing a public complaints investigation, according to an email from Prince Albert Police.
