A shortage of teachers in government schools has triggered a 'crisis-like' scenario in Jammu & Kashmir’s Ramban district.
The acute dearth of teaching staff in government-run schools generated a ‘crisis like’ situation in the Ramban district of Jammu & Kashmir, as informed by a senior government official on Monday. Ramban District Development Commissioner Mussarat Islam had red-flagged the problem of increasing the gap between the sanctioned strength and in position teaching staff to Jammu Divisional Commissioner Ramesh Kumar in a conversation. He further asked for immediate action to put back the school education department on rail.
Quoting a statement by Ramban chief education officer on the incongruity between the sanctioned strength and vacancies for principals, headmasters, and other teaching staff at all levels in government schools across the district, Mussarat Islam said, “The figures are disturbing.”
Ramban District Development Commissioner Mussarat Islam further said that the acute shortage of staff has led to a ‘crisis-like’ situation in the district.
He also informed that there were widespread protests by the Panchayati Raj institutions, parents, and the general public almost every day with the demand to fill up vacancies.
The district commissioner further wrote in his letter, “Since the matter was last taken up with the school education department for filling up of vacant posts, there has been a steady procession of teaching staff, especially lecturers & masters, to the other districts without any replacements, thus rendering the majority of the schools without adequate teaching staff.”
He said 168 posts (15 under orders of transfer) of lecturers, out of 269 are presently lying vacant with a large number of higher secondary schools left without even a single lecturer.
Mussarat Islam further informed that 168 out of 269 lecturer positions are currently empty, with a large number of higher secondary schools lacking even a single lecturer.
