
COVID-19 on Vancouver Island: Health officials to provide update on cases, restrictions

British Columbia health officials will provide an update Tuesday on the province's latest COVID-19 case numbers, deaths and hospitalizations. The update will follow a live news conference with provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry and Health Minister Adrian Dix, who will provide new guidance on pandemic restrictions limiting indoor gatherings, events and recreation.

Pandemic measures imposed last month were set to expire today but the province has extended them until new information is provided at today's news conference.

Three more deaths from COVID-19 were recorded in the Vancouver Island region Monday, amid 22 deaths recorded in B.C. since Friday.
The update put the province's pandemic death toll at 2,490, including 155 deaths in the island region.
There are currently 60 people in hospital with COVID-19 on Vancouver Island, representing a month-over-month increase since Dec. 17, when 42 people were in hospital with the disease on the island.
However, the number of hospitalizations is down from one week ago, when 64 patients were in hospital with COVID-19, according to the B.C. Centre for Disease Control.
Critical care admissions have also dropped, with 10 people currently in the ICU for treatment of COVID-19 compared to 13 patients last Monday and 14 patients on Dec. 17.
