Amid rising cases of Omicron variant of coronavirus, the technology of genome sequencing is under the spotlight. Here's how genome sequencing is done in labs.
India has reported 38 cases of Omicron variant of coronavirus so far, with the latest case reported in Kerala on Sunday. Besides this, hundreds of Covid-19 positive samples are also being genome tested across labs in India.
Amid rising cases of the new variant, the technology of genome sequencing is under the spotlight. Dr SK Sarin, Vice-Chancellor of ILBS Hospital in Delhi, said just like human body is made up of DNA, virus is also made from either DNA or RNA. The coronavirus is made of RNA, and genome sequencing is the technique by which the genetic coding of this RNA is obtained.
