Congress’s Milind Deora scoffs at woman set to marry herself, gets schooled by netizen
India Today
Referring to Kshama Bindu’s plans to marry herself, Congress leader Milind Deora panned sologamy as another example of “wokeness”. Here’s what a “woke” netizen had to say about that.
The practice of sologamy came into the national spotlight this week after a girl from Gujarat announced plans to marry herself. The move has divided the internet while some supported the choice, others were confused or outright opposed to the concept. Congress leader Milind Deora appears to be among the naysayers.
Quote tweeting a news report about Kshama Bindu, the woman set to tie the knot with herself, Milind Deora panned sologamy as another example of “wokeness” and prayed that Indian society should steer clear of this sort of “insanity”.
“I have said it before -- ‘wokeness’ borders on insanity. Let’s hope it stays far, far away from India,” tweeted Deora.
Deora’s opinion was echoed by a few quarters. But one netizen, seemingly piqued at the double standards, let the former Union minister have it.
Mario da Penha, a PhD candidate in History at Rutgers University who displays the rainbow Pride flag emoji right next to the Tricolour in his Twitter handle, replied to Deora thus: “We live in a country where women born under the influence of Mars must marry banana plants, peepal trees, dogs and clay pots so their negative influence is not transferred to their future husbands. If ‘wokeness’ is insanity, what do you call these customary practices?”
The Congress leader has yet to respond to the tweet.
Kshama Bindu, a resident of Vadodara, is all set to marry herself on June 11 in what is being said to be India’s first case of sologamy. She identifies as bisexual.
