Congress's Gujarat President Jagdish Thakor made a slew of promises directed toward farmers ahead of assembly elections.
Ahead of Gujarat Assembly elections and seeking to wrest power from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), on August 12, Congress made a slew of vows for the poll-bound state. At the latest, the party, seeking to regain its hold over Gujarat as it had during the creation of the state in 1960, has announced promises for farmers.
One of the vows includes three lakh loan waivers for farmers and up to ten hours of free-of-cost electricity for farmers as well. This came two days after Aam Aadmi Party convener Arvind Kejriwal promised that if his party came to power in Gujarat, AAP would issue a monthly allowance of Rs 1000 to every woman aged above 18 years and if one is willing to avail the grant. Earlier, Kejriwal had even promised to grant Rs 3,000 to the unemployed youth of the state.
"People's money should go to people, not Swiss banks," the Delhi Chief Minister said during his rally before hundreds of women in Gujarat.
With no reference to AAP's poll vows, Congress leaders, during a press conference, said Gujarat's population was smart and they would not fall prey to such 'false promises'.
Senior Congress leader Bharatsinh Solanki and Gujarat Congress president Jagdish Thakor held a press conference on Friday.
Solanki said, "There is a party who is giving false promises to the people of Gujarat. However, the people of Gujarat are smart and they will not fall prey to such false promises. Prime Minister Narendra Modi himself also gives so many false promises. What about that? He said about 15 lakhs to everyone. What would you call that? It is Congress who has fulfilled all the promises."
Amongst other promises, the Congress unit in Gujarat also said that political interference will be stopped by changing the cooperative structure. Other promises included:
