Congress leader Omveer Yadav slams Centre for 'hiding' data amid row over WHO report

Supporting the WHO report that claims India's Covid-19 death toll is nearly ten times higher than the official figure, Congress leader Omveer Yadav accused the Centre of 'hiding' data.
Days after the World Health Organization (WHO) pegged the number of Covid-19 deaths in India to be around 47 lakh, compared to the Indian government's claim of around five lakh, Uttar Pradesh Congress leader Omveer Yadav accused the BJP-led central government of hiding data.
"The BJP government even withheld the figures of those who died during the Covid period," said Omveer Yadav at a press conference on Sunday.
"The government data states that there have been 4.8 lakh deaths in the country due to Covid, while WHO data shows that 47 lakh people have died in the country due to Covid-19," Omveer Yadav said.
"The BJP government has repeatedly lied about every issue, whether it is regarding inflation, electricity, or employment," Yadav stated.
He also urged the BJP-led central government to support the kin of those who succumbed to the deadly virus with Rs 4 lakh ex gratia.
"The central government is to blame for the deaths caused by Covid-19. It should give Rs 4 lakh to each of the victims' families," he added.
