The Enforcement Directorate summoned Congress chief Sonia Gandhi to appear before it in connection with a money laundering case on June 8. However, she is unlikely to do so on account of health issues.
Congress interim president Sonia Gandhi is unlikely to appear before the Enforcement Directorate on Wednesday, as per sources. This is due to health issues - the leader had tested positive for Covid-19 on June 2.
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) had summoned Sonia Gandhi and her son Lok Sabha MP Rahul Gandhi to appear before it on June 8 in connection with a money laundering case linked to the National Herald newspaper-AJL issue.
As of Tuesday afternoon, no official communication had been sent to the ED and a final decision was yet to be taken. But, as per sources, an exemption on health grounds was likely to be sought.
Last week, Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala had said that it was hoped Sonia Gandhi would recover in a few days and be able to appear before the ED as planned on June 8. He said she was determined to do so.
The National Herald matter came to the fore when former BJP MP Subramanian Swamy filed a case in the Delhi High Court accusing Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi of land grabbing and misappropriating funds worth thousands of crores of rupees.
He alleged that the Gandhis had acquired a public limited company — AJL — through a privately held firm — Young India Limited — of which Rahul Gandhi was the director.
Many shareholders of the AJL, including former law minister Shanti Bhushan and former chief justice of Allahabad and Madras High Courts Markandey Katju, said they were not served any notice when YIL acquired control over it. They said that the shares held by their fathers were transferred to AJL in 2010 without their consent.
