Confederation College's new president will be a familiar face on campus in Thunder Bay

Confederation College has named its new president.
Michelle Salo will officially take over the position on Sept. 1, following the retirement of current president Kathleen Lynch.
"It's exciting for me," Salo said at a media event on Thursday. "I'm really happy to be in this position where I can serve the community of northwestern Ontario."
Salo studied business administration at the college, and holds a professional accountant certification.
She has worked for the college since 2019: she began her career there as vice-president of finance and administration, and then moved on to become the college's chief operating officer in 2022.
"It's really important that our students understand that it's not just where you start, but where you end your career," Salo said. "There's a lot of things that you can do with the pathway starting here at Confederation College."
Being a former student herself, Salo said she wants students who attend the college during her time as president to feel like it's a "place of comfort."
"They can come here and get an excellent education, but also feel like they're supported by all the faculty, staff and that we have everything that they need for wraparound services, and feel like they're prepared to go out into the world."
Salo said working with Lynch has also helped prepare her for the president's role.
"She's been a true leader and mentor to me," Salo said of Lynch. "She really taught me how to work in this industry and to understand it much better. She's done so much for this college."
Daryl Skworchinski, chair of the college board, said Salo was the most-highly-qualified candidate they encountered during the search for a new president.
"The financial stability of the college is always top-of-mind for the board," he said. "So she stood out as the number one candidate. And obviously bringing somebody internal means that there's very little transition, and we just keep moving the college forward."
