Columbia anti-Israel protesters are defying order to disperse by 2 p.m.: Here’s what happens next
NY Post
Hundreds of Columbia anti-Israel protesters defied the 2 p.m. Monday deadline to vacate the campus tent camp — and vowed the stay and even escalate their actions against the university.
It was not immediately clear if the Ivy League school would once again call in the NYPD to remove students from the $90,000-per-year campus.
About 200 students encircled the tent camp, while some remained in it and all of them chanted anti-Israel and anti-Columbia slogans. Outside the school gates in Morningside Heights, dozens of anti-Israel protesters rallied and chanted “Globalize the intifada” as the deadline ticked down.
Columbia president Minouche Shafik, who has faced increasing calls to resign over her handling of the prolonged campus upheaval, issued a lengthy statement Monday morning, giving students an ultimatum to disperse or face suspension after attempts to negotiate a peaceful settlement with the protest groups failed.
The school also distributed notices around campus directing students to turn themselves in to university officials by the deadline and commit to obeying university policies “through June 30, 2025 or the date of the conferral of your degree, whichever is earlier,” the notice read.
However, the protest groups convened at noon and scheduled a press conference for 2:30 p.m. Monday to denounce the Columbia administration.
