Coimbatore Corporation to re-develop Thudiyalur bus stand due to lack of infrastructure and increasing commuters, costing ₹1 crore.
The Coimbatore Corporation plans to re-develop the existing bus stand at Thudiyalur, located on the Thudiyalur–Saravanampatti Road near the Thudiyalur junction in the city, at ₹1 crore because of increasing number of commuters in Thudiyalur area.
The passengers point out the lack of basic infrastructure. “The bus stand, built nearly 10 years ago, is inadequate to accommodate the rising number of travellers. Even within the bus stand, homeless individuals and sometimes intoxicated people occupy the space, obstructing access. People are left to wait under the scorching sun with no shade,” says R. Sathish Kumar, a commuter.
A bus driver says, “Most buses halt at the bus stand, but there is no dedicated space for drivers and conductors to rest. Additionally, the public toilet opposite the bus stand is not well-maintained.”
S. Malarvizhi, a commuter from Thudiyalur, adds that the weekly vegetable market, set up every Monday opposite the bus stand, leads to traffic congestion.
An engineering official from the Corporation explained that the re-development plan was drawn up in response to public demand. Preliminary work has begun to assess the number of buses that halt and pass through the stand, as well as the passenger footfall. The proposed improvements include additional seating, a proper shelter, a display board with bus service and timing information, and infrastructure similar to that opposite the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital, which is under consideration. A consultant will be brought in to finalise the plan.
