Coimbatore Corporation's long-delayed multi-level parking projects in Gandhipuram and Town Hall areas face funding challenges despite revisions.
The Coimbatore Corporation’s proposal to construct multi-level parking facilities on Cross Cut Road in Gandhipuram and Raja Street near Town Hall has remained on paper for several years.
“Residents as well as visitors find it difficult to park in these areas during weekends and festivals. Even though valet parking is offered, many cars and two-wheelers have no place to park and must go around searching. With the number of registered vehicles in the city steadily increasing over the years, existing parking spaces are proving to be inadequate in busy commercial areas in the city,” said a commuter.
The civic body had submitted proposals to the State government in 2017. The Cross Cut Road facility was designed as a five-storey structure with a capacity for 1,466 two-wheelers and 847 four-wheelers, at an estimated cost of ₹32.99 crore. The B.B. Street facility was planned as a four-storey structure for 1,341 two-wheelers and 483 four-wheelers, at ₹28.84 crore. However, funds were not sanctioned.
In 2023, the Corporation again submitted proposals for the two locations, with revised plans, but the projects did not take off as they involved costs above ₹20 crore each.
Now, the Corporation has further revised the estimates. The Cross Cut Road facility is proposed to cost ₹10 crore, with space for 200 to 400 cars. The Raja Street structure is planned at ₹15 crore.
A senior Corporation official said the survey was under way and is expected to take another month. The detailed project report will be submitted after that. The project is proposed to be funded through the Corporation’s general funds.
