Coimbatore Corporation's project to revive River Noyyal includes check dams, parks, and treatment plants to prevent pollution.
The Coimbatore Corporation has embarked on a major project to revive River Noyyal, and a detailed project report (DPR) has been forwarded to the State Government seeking ₹200 crore to infuse life into the almost dead river.
River Noyyal, which originates from Kovai Coutrallam waterfalls, runs through Coimbatore district, Tiruppur, Erode, Karur and Tiruchirappalli. Of this, it runs along the city for 18.56 km, and along the district for 67.71 km. The first major challenge is to stop dumping of solid waste and preventing the mixing of effluents and sewage into the river.
The Corporation plans to construct small check dams, install sponge parks to prevent water contamination, platforms on either side of the river to act as walking tracks, cycling tracks, drinking water and toilet facility, besides roads on either side.
In the fist phase, three sewerage treatment plants are being planned at ₹30 crore, and in the second phase eight sewerage treatment plants are planned at ₹50 crore.
The Corporation has approached the Commissioner of Municipal Administration to sanction the funds to begin the works.
