Coimbatore Corporation allocates ₹6.54 crore to redesign key junction, including traffic island construction, to improve safety and reduce congestion.
The Coimbatore Corporation has mobilised ₹6.54 crore to redesign an ‘S’ bend on Vilankurichi Road in the East Zone Ward No. 24. The project, which includes the construction of a traffic island, aims to reduce congestion and improve safety at the key junction.
The bend is located at the intersection of Vilankurichi Road, Thanneerpandal Road, Codissia Road, and Gandhi Ma Nagar Road, all of which are major commercial roads in the city. Due to the area’s proximity to several godowns, heavy vehicle traffic is a common challenge, complicating traffic flow.
The construction of a traffic island at the junction has been a long-pending request from motorists and nearby residents, dating back nearly a decade. Now, the much-awaited project is set to proceed.
To facilitate the project, 39.73 cents of land, including 11 private patta plots, were required for acquisition. A request was sent to the Commissioner of Land Administration (CLA) in Chennai through the District Collector for administrative approval. Following clearance from the Revenue and Finance Departments, the CLA recommended an expenditure of ₹8.19 crore for land acquisition. After direct negotiations with landowners by the Corporation, the cost was reduced to ₹6.04 crore, with ₹3,500 per square foot agreed upon.
An additional ₹50 lakh has been allocated for the construction of the traffic island, bringing the total project cost to ₹6.54 crore, which will be sourced from the Corporation general funds.
“The notices for land acquisition will be sent, and once the land acquisition process is completed, the proposed traffic island (a roundabout) design will undergo minor changes according to practicality and will be implemented. The whole process, from land acquisition to construction, might be completed within a month, and works are expected to start soon,” said a Corporation official.
